IP Code – Protection against Ingress of Solid Foreign Objects

The IP code indicates the degree of protection for electrical equipment and cabinets against solid foreign objects and water, which are specified in the IEC standard 529.

Protection of Persons / Protection against Solid Foreign Objects

1st Digit	Description	Degree of Protection
0	No protection	Not especially protected
1	Protected against solid objects greater than 50mm	Protection against accidental contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure by a large surface of the human body, for example a hand. No solid objects with a diameter greater than 50mm enter in the equipment.
2	Protected against solid objects greater than 12mm	Protection against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure by a part of the human body less than 80mm in length, for example a finger. No solid objects with a diameter greater than 12mm enter in the equipment.
3	Protected against solid objects greater than 2.5mm	No tips of solid objects, such as a tool or wire with a diameter or thickness greater than 2.5 mm enter in the equipment.
4	Protected against solid objects greater than 1.0mm	No tips of solid objects, such as a wire with a diameter or thickness greater than 1.0mm enter in the equipment.
5	Dust protected	The ingress of dust is not totally prevented, but dust cannot enter in an amount sufficient to interfere with satisfactory operation of the equipment.
6	Dust tight	No dust enters in the equipment.

Protection against Ingress of Water

2	Protected against vertically falling water drops when enclosure tilted up to 15°	Vertically falling drops shall have no harmful effects when the enclosure is tilted at any angle up to 15°.
3	Protected against spraying water	Water sprayed at an angle up to 60°on either side of the vertical shall have no harmful effects.
4	Protected against splashing water	Water splashed against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
5	Protected against water jets	Water projected in jets against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
6	Protected against powerful water jets	Water projected in powerful jets against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
7	Protected against the effects of temporary immersion in water	Temporary immersion in water under specified conditions of pressure and time shall have no harmful effects.
8	Protected against the effects of continuous immersion in water	Continuous immersion in water under conditions specified by the manufacturer shall have no harmful effects. The enclosure is completely sealed.
